PLASFED President Karadeniz: 'The Permanent Solution to the Current Account Deficit Lies in Production'

PLASFED President Ömer Karadeniz stated that the way to permanently reduce the current account deficit is through increasing production and exports, noting that industrialists must be provided with access to affordable financing. Pointing to the strategic importance of the plastics industry, Karadeniz emphasized that the DYS and KAS will make significant contributions to both the environment and the economy through recycling.

Plastics Industrialists Federation (PLASFED) Chairman of the Board Ömer Karadeniz stated that the way to reduce the current account deficit in the Turkish economy is through increasing production and exports, and that access to financing for industrialists should be facilitated. Making evaluations regarding the agenda on the program presented by Bengü Kantekin on Ulusal Kanal, Karadeniz emphasized that removing obstacles in front of production is of critical importance for Turkey's growth.

Evaluating the May current account deficit data, Karadeniz said, "Turkey's greatest strength is production. The way to permanently reduce the current account deficit is by increasing production and exports. Countries that produce are always economically stronger."

Expressing that one of the most important problems of industrialists is access to financing, Karadeniz stated that the high-interest environment slows down investments and said, "Postponing investments also negatively affects production capacity. Providing affordable financing to the industry is of great importance."

Referring to the PMI data announced by the Istanbul Chamber of Industry, Karadeniz pointed out that the manufacturing industry has remained below the threshold value of 50 points for a long time. Stating that this picture reveals that production needs to be supported, Karadeniz said that, on the other hand, the positive divergence of the chemical, plastic, and rubber products sector in the PMI shows the resilience of the sector.

“Engineering plastics are used in many strategic areas”

Emphasizing that the plastics sector is not just about packaging products, Karadeniz stated that engineering plastics and composite materials are used in many strategic areas from the defense industry to automotive, and from health to aviation.

Pointing out that Turkey is largely dependent on imports for plastic raw materials, Karadeniz said that recycling is a strategic issue from an economic perspective. Stating that the Deposit Management System (DYS), which was implemented in July, is an important step, Karadeniz reminded that it is aimed to bring approximately 25 billion packages into the economy annually through the system.

Stating that citizens should contribute more to recycling, Karadeniz said, "Every package thrown in the trash is now a raw material with economic value. Recovering these products will both protect the environment and reduce our country's foreign currency loss."

Emphasizing that the Source Separation System (KAS) should also be rapidly expanded, Karadeniz added that strengthening the recycling culture in all segments of society will make a significant contribution to Turkey's sustainable production goals.
