PLASFED PLASTIC CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS REPORT PUBLISHED!

PLASFED (Plastics Industrialists Federation) published its 2013 Plastic Construction Products Sector Monitoring Report. The report emphasized that Turkey is a net exporter in this field, noting that as of the end of 2013, production reached 7.2 billion dollars, exports 1.8 billion dollars, and a foreign trade surplus of 1.3 billion dollars was achieved.

In his evaluation regarding the report, PLASFED Chairman of the Board Selçuk Aksoy stated that Turkey's importance in plastic products, which are increasingly used in infrastructure and superstructure with new products every day, is growing, adding, “All data shows that plastic is the construction material of the future and that Turkish plastic construction material manufacturers continue to grow.”

Reminding that Turkey is one of the most advantageous countries in meeting the needs of countries undergoing reconstruction, Selçuk Aksoy said, “Turkish manufacturers should be supported more in plastic construction materials, whose importance is increasing globally. More initiatives and interest in marketing plastic construction materials will be to everyone's benefit.”

PLASFED, which generates the most comprehensive and regular data for the plastics sector, published its 2013 Plastic Construction Products Sector Monitoring Report. The report noted that Turkish plastic construction product manufacturers, who meet 93 percent of domestic demand, continued their growth in 2013, and the foreign trade surplus increased by 7 percent in value, reaching 1 billion 330 million dollars.

The report, which revealed that growth continues in plastic construction materials whose use is rapidly spreading in infrastructure and superstructure constructions worldwide and in Turkey, replacing alternative materials with new products, also emphasized the need for the sector to transition to high value-added products. Despite 42 percent of products produced in terms of quantity being exported, the report stated that when viewed in terms of value, 25 percent of total production was exported.

“We are right in the middle of a reconstructing geography”

In his evaluations regarding the report, PLASFED Chairman of the Board Selçuk Aksoy underlined that plastic offers lighter, more durable, and cheaper products compared to their counterparts in infrastructure and superstructure by developing new products. Aksoy stated that this process has led to plastic construction products being preferred more by the construction sector worldwide and in Turkey, adding, “Turkish manufacturers should be supported more in plastic construction materials, whose importance is increasing globally.”

Reminding that Turkey is among the countries with a large construction market, Aksoy said, “Our construction continues in all areas. Furthermore, we are right in the middle of a reconstructing geography. Our region consists of countries continuing all kinds of infrastructure and superstructure investments, and this reconstruction will continue even further. The 7.2 billion dollar volume reached by plastic construction material manufacturers in Turkey is certainly important, but we have a longer way to go, and we want to run this race. Turkey offers one of the most advantageous positions in meeting the needs of these countries. Making good use of this advantage and working together with our stakeholders in all marketing activities will be beneficial to all of us. We call upon our international construction industrialists, engineering, and consulting firms operating in the construction sector, who have made our country famous with their recent successes, to work more with us, to see and use our products.”

There is a need for more investment, a transition to value-added products!

Selçuk Aksoy also reminded that the unit value of Turkey's plastic construction products exports being almost half the unit value of imported products is an important indicator, stating, “Although we export 42 percent of production in terms of quantity, when looking at value, this proportion drops to 25 percent. This means we need more investment and a transition to value-added products. Everywhere in the world, these processes have been supported and guided by the government. In this regard, as a sector, we are ready to do our part, and our expectation from the government is to support us in this process both financially and in terms of research.”

Turkish plastic construction products rank 5th in the global export market with a 4% share!

The PLASFED Report, which includes finalized data for the Turkish plastic construction products sector as of the end of 2013, stated that as of the end of 2012, when the latest comparable data on a global scale was produced, Turkey ranked 5th in the global plastic construction products export market with a 4% share.

Production

It was stated that the sector's plastic production increased from 1.1 million tons in 2008 to 1.7 million tons as of the end of 2013, and the production value reached 7.2 billion dollars. It was noted that production increased by 12 percent in value compared to the previous year, and its share in total plastic production remained stable at 22 percent.

Imports

The PLASFED Report, which indicated that Turkey imports high value-added products, noted that imports increased by 17 percent in value compared to the previous year, reaching 448 million dollars. It was emphasized that 7 percent of domestic consumption in terms of quantity and 8 percent in terms of value was met by imports, and consequently, 93 percent of domestic consumption in terms of quantity and 92 percent in terms of value was met by domestic firms.

Exports, foreign trade surplus, and foreign trade unit prices

It was stated that Turkey's plastic construction product exports continuously increased from 466 thousand tons and 1.3 billion dollars in 2008; with an increase of 7 percent in terms of quantity and 9 percent in terms of value compared to the previous year, reaching 713 million tons and 1.8 billion dollars by the end of 2013.

The report stated that Turkey is the world's fifth-largest exporter of plastic construction products, and among EU countries, it is the third-largest exporter after Germany and Italy. It was noted that Turkey sells plastic construction products to over 150 countries, and the countries to which the most products are exported, in order, are Iraq, Russia, Libya, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Bulgaria, and Romania. It was indicated that exports to these top 10 countries accounted for 71 percent of total exports in terms of quantity and 67 percent in terms of value. In light of this data, it was stated that the foreign trade surplus increased by 7 percent in value compared to the previous year, reaching 1 billion 330 million dollars by the end of 2013. The report also pointed out a significant difference in export and import unit prices, in favor of imports. Accordingly, in 2013, the import unit price increased by 5 percent compared to 2012, rising to 5,889 dollars per ton. The export unit price, on the other hand, increased by 2 percent compared to the previous year, realizing at 2,494 dollars.
