PLASFED Chairman of the Board Ömer Karadeniz was a guest of Sema Ertekin in the SME Platform program broadcasted on A Para screens. Karadeniz made evaluations under the headings of the current outlook of industry, inflation and interest rate processes, exports, the raw material needs of the plastics sector, investments, and the circular economy.
Stating that the downward trend in inflation is important for industrialists, Karadeniz said that a predictable and stable economic environment, alongside price stability, is required to strengthen the investment environment. Expressing that the policy rate is also important in terms of the disinflation process, Karadeniz stated that market expectations regarding the Central Bank Monetary Policy Committee meeting to be held on October 22 are in the direction of a 100 basis point cut.
Exports need to be supported
Touching upon Turkey's export performance as well, Karadeniz emphasized that exports are critically important for sustainable growth. Stating that exporters need to be supported more strongly, Karadeniz said that increasing exports plays a major role in improving Turkey's foreign trade balance.
Drawing attention to the importance of the chemical sector in Turkey's exports, Karadeniz stated that the plastics sector also holds a significant place within this structure. He stated that plastics are no longer limited to traditional products and are used in many areas involving high technology, ranging from automotive to the defense industry. Karadeniz noted that the plastics sector realized 9.5 billion dollars of direct exports in 2025, and with indirect exports, the sector's contribution to the economy reached a much higher level.
Drew attention to raw material dependency
Stating that one of the most important structural problems of the plastics industry is raw material supply, Karadeniz said that the sector's raw material need is dependent on imports by 85-90 percent. Expressing that for this reason, the industrialist who exports uses a significant portion of the foreign currency they earn for raw material imports, Karadeniz emphasized that the access of industrialists to foreign exchange resources is of great importance in terms of production and exports.
Stating that petrochemical investments in the Ceyhan region offer an important opportunity in this respect, Karadeniz said that in addition to new raw material investments, investments aimed at recycling, the circular economy, and value-added production must also be supported.
Emphasis on the circular economy
Also touching upon the importance of the Deposit Return System, Karadeniz stated that the system is valuable in terms of protecting the environment and bringing waste back into the economy. Stating that the Source Separation System should also be put into effect, Karadeniz said that the circular economy creates not only environmental but also economic value.
Stating that Turkey needs to make more investments in the fields of sustainable production and the circular economy, Karadeniz drew attention to the importance that protecting the environment holds for future generations.
