Due to the continuation of challenging market conditions, a downward trend in manufacturing industry performance has been observed for almost a year. The stagnant demand conditions have affected the Turkish manufacturing industry, showing a tendency to slow down even in the first month of 2025. The headline PMI, which was at 49.1 in December, decreased to 48 in January. While there are comments that this decline in manufacturing performance will continue for some time, the fragility in demand is expected to persist.
Ömer Karadeniz, President of the Plastic Industrialists Federation (PLASFED), stated that the decline in the Turkish manufacturing sector's PMI data in January is concerning. He expressed that the PMI data, which has been continuously below the threshold for 11 months, falling below the previous month, is an indicator of the difficulties faced by the industrialists. Karadeniz emphasized that development cannot occur without production and demanded solutions to the problems of industrialists.
Manufacturing Industry as the Cause of Slowdown in Growth
Karadeniz, the head of the umbrella organization PLASFED, indicated that the data is not promising for the future, stating that the manufacturing industry continues to operate within the contraction zone. Looking at the growth figures, a slowdown is observed, with one of the major reasons being the weakening in the manufacturing sector. “According to PMI data, the stagnation in the demand environment has also reflected in the new orders data. Both total new orders and new export orders recorded a slowdown compared to the previous month. Tight financing conditions, geopolitical tensions, and trade protectionism are negatively affecting the manufacturing industry,” he said.
