3.84% growth expected in the plastics industry and 6% in the composite industry in 2016
The plastics production expected to rise 3.84 percent in 2016

As underlying in recent analysis prepared by Turkish Plastics Industrialists’ Federation (PLASFED), in 2016, the Turkish plastics production is forecasted to reach 9.09 million tons with 3.84 percent increase and 34.7 billion USD in terms of production value. The actual figure of the previous year is reportedly to be 8.75 million tons. The stagnation arising from consecutive elections held in 2015 allowed those outstanding purchase orders to come into play promptly at the beginning of this year, and the industrial growth figures for the first half turned to be relatively higher depending on the strong growth of production capacity of industries such as white appliances, durable consumer goods and automotive, on the one hand, and the base effect, on the other hand. However, the high performance achieved in the first half of the year declined in the second half based on the decrease in overall demand as affected by the political issues etc. Notwithstanding, the plastics industry is anticipated to demonstrate growth about 3.84 percent above expected Turkish GDP growth in 2016.

The plastic goods export volume anticipated to decline 1.6 percent by quantity and 5.3 percent in terms of value in 2016

In 2016, the plastic goods export volume is anticipated to decline 1.6 percent by quantity and 5.3 percent by value. The supply of raw materials is expected to rise 1.6 percent by quantity, while 7.9 percent decline in value is anticipated. The industry of plastic processing machinery put a smile on everyone's face this year. About 11.2 percent growth in value is expected this year due to the base effect caused by the sharp fall of the previous year and the upward effect of markets such as Iran, North Africa etc. Although the previous year's EUR/USD parity effect is seen to weaken, new conjectural issues are understood to slow down the industrial export volume this year. What primarily lies behind this decline is the recession in global trade, followed by some political problems incurred by neighboring countries, and the decreasing unit prices in the export industry which is critical, but overlooked. Those export unit prices decreased not only in the plastics industry, but also in relation to the entire range of Turkish export goods as global trade suffer from the same problem mainly depend on the falling demand.

Consequently, the bell started to toll in relation to the need for high value added production. However, one of the most unfortunate incidents was the closing down of the Plastics Promotion Group with no activity performed at all whereby our industry wasted its energy this year. A new regulation is on the verge of being introduced under the name of the Turkish Promotion Group, where all promotion groups are closed down within the framework of the project that aims at joining them under a single roof with their organizational structures and ways of operations regulated by the Ministry of Economy.

The composite industry expected to grow %6 in 2016

There is an expectation that the Turkish composite industry will grow consistently due to the economic growth achieved by developing countries in the upcoming period of five years, the advancement of industries, such as automotive and wind energy, in developed and developing countries and the continuation of increasing use of composite materials in space and aviation industries, particularly for commercial aircrafts.

The growth achieved by the composite industry is usually above the global economic growth.  As of current situation today, the Turkish composite material industry has attained a volume of 265k tons amounting to EUR 1.4 billion. The Turkish composite industry demonstrates a growth performance above that of the European and global composite industries. In past years, the Turkish composite industry displayed a growth performance ranging between 8 percent and 12 percent. The growth rate is estimated as 6 percent in 2016.

In terms of value, the global composite industry is expected to reach a value of EUR 80 billion with 5 percent growth per annum in the upcoming period of five years. The growth by value is expected to be 4 percent in the North America and Europe and 7 percent in Asia and other regions around the globe.

The industry directly export goods amounting to about EUR 250 million per annum. The performance by our manufacturers will enhance, if stabilization is achieved in our region and in the Middle East and the European economy recovers.
